iPhone3 will not restore, error 1611?

Hi,

Fantastic site. I am trying to fix an iphone 3, that was given to me not working. It only shows the apple sign when i plugged into the computer. It changes logo in dfu mode, itunes recognizes that it needs restoring , but during the installation i get error 1611.

Apple support site suggests that this might be a hardware problem, but no further clues there. I have read some people have had this error as a software problem, but no luck so far.

Tried on different computers using a new usb connector........Id love some help.

Thanks Alistair

Polly is probably right about the battery. But another cause of Error 1611 is your computer Hosts file blocking Apple from signing your firmware. This is a good thing if you are Jailbreaking and Unlocking your iPhone. Anyway you can check if this is the problem very easy. Search on your computer for Hosts. Open the Hosts file and see if any lines have gs.apple.com If so, this is the problem most likely, and not the battery hopefully.

yep, I'd agree with that..just depends whether it's a jb phone with a failed restore.

brad.. how'd you like to do a guide for all the software/jb problems? click on the feedback welcome at the bottom..it'll take you to metaifixit, bit of a user forum. I think you're far better at the hacking/jb etc...it's a pretty big problem for people too.. (take a look for a link in one of the discussions about pm each other)

I'd email you but you have no info on your profile. cheers, Jen

+ I'd like to second that request

Another cause of 1611 which you do not mention is restoring with a Custom Firmware. To restore with a custom firmware you need to be in Pwned DFU Mode, not regular DFU. But since you are not using a Custom Firmware this is not causing the 1611.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou ! i stripped it down to the battery and it measured about ten percent of what it should do.........so fingers crossed that i have only one problem. I don't get why Apple don't put this more clearly on their support website, instead of just saying 6011 hardware issue. I will post again when I know I've won. Or not ; )

because then we'd be fixing things for 10% of the cost... it's all about the money!

Hmmmmmm, i have replaced the battery, and i am still getting the 1611 error when i try to restore the software - same as last time. The phone seems to go on and off a couple of times before it declares this problem.

Also i have searched my computer for hosts and i could not find any files that fitted the description, i have also tired tiny umbrella, but it couldnt find any SHSH files ...........any more help????????????

See if it works when you disconnect the proximity sensor. If it does, you need a different proximity sensor as it is incompatible. I see this a lot.
