Do Classic iPods kill hard drives? 2nd one in and dead.

Hello! I have an iPod Classic 6 80gb that I bought recently. I bought it with a bad Hard Drive. I had a spare 30gb Hard Drive from a 5.5 laying around and it had low usage on it according to the Smart Data. I have been using it for almost a week now and on my way home today it just started acting up and so I reset it and now it's giving me the Red X again. Does anyone know if the Classic 6 has problems with killing hard drives? I don't want to put another one in if it's just going to kill it.

@soulxcx no they do not. Remember that HDD are mechanical and thus suffer from a higher failure rate to begin with. Even so your 30GB may not have had a lot of use on it but age plays a role on bushings etc. as well. Sometimes it is better to use those drives than to store them. The iPod Classic is a good model and I would replace the drive once more with a good replacement (something like a new drive or at least a remanufactured drive).

I have an iPod Classic that still has its original hard drive in it and it is working fine. Probably just a coincidence that your drives died when they were inside your iPod. If you are willing to invest your time and effort in an SSD I highly suggest you do so. I have had friends do this upgrade and it brings new life into these iPods.

I was planning to go with an SSD. But after that happened on the way home, it gave me second thoughts about doing anything. That's why I came here before going ahead and doing it. Wanted to make sure I wouldn't be wasting my money if it wanted to just kill it.

@soulxcx You should be OK, I think your situation was a mere coincidence.
