Why does my screen flicker and go completely black?

When i turn on my Macbook the screen flickers and goes black. It is operational and boots up, however i cant see anyhting on the screen. I hooked up an external monitor to the macbook and the external monitor goes black to. It's not the inverter or inverter cable because those have been replaced. is it more likely the mother board or the monitor and data cable?

If you can't see anything with an external monitor you probably have a logic board problem.

I agree with Ralph. Try it in Target Mode to recover and/or repair your hard drive. You can get your logic board repaired here if you have to: http://www.dttservice.com/macbook.html
