Xbox 360 plays video but no sound on every tv in house?

After coming back from a vacation i came to my xbox 360 and found out that the video played just fine but it no longer was able to play sound. i have tried different cords on different tvs to see the same result time after time. my xbox is out of warranty and they are going to charge me $120 to get it fixed but i'd rather do it myself. i've been told by microsoft that it is most likely the hardware. Does anyone else have the same problem?

There's a low chance that the problem is with the console. Most likely, your problem is with the A/V cables. I've repaired ~30 360s and I've never seen one that wouldn't play sound. If it is a problem with the actual console, then it would most likely be related to the southbridge on the motherboard, which isn't easily fixable. What is the manufacture date on the console? (It should be labeled on a sticker on the back of the console) Also, does it have an HDMI port?
