Keyboard and trackpad behave erratically

Hello!

i have a slight problem with my MacBook Pro early 2015. For some reason the keyboard strokes are not correctly registered by the OS. On the login screen typing either triggers the “can’t type here” sound or wrong letters / erratic movement occur. For example pressing the louder button usually first turns the sound down twice and then mutes the Mac. Also a trackpad click only triggers the secondary function. A normal click or tap is not possible.

This is already weird but I also checked the onscreen keyboard and there the right buttons are highlighted meaning that at least there I see full function . However, After connecting an external keyboard and typing a little bit the onscreen keyboard shows only weird signs when I type one the MacBooks keyboard

Sometimes the keyboard completely works for some time just to revert to the no-function a little later.

What did I try to fix it:

I already exchanged the cable that connects the trackpad to the logic board and cleared the nvram.

Hi there, I have exactly the same problem with yours, with the same model. Are you able to resolve it in the end? I changed my trackpad cable too but issue still remains. :(

@microcuts - Sounds like you need a new trackpad.

In my case, the keyboard had a water damage.

I had to replace the top case. There was some water damage to the keyboard. This fixed the problem

If you’ve already replaced the trackpad cable and you’re still experiencing these problems, then the next in line would be the trackpad itself. I’d go ahead and replace it and see if it corrects your problem.

Hi! Thanks for your answer.

As the battery is glued in I am a little reluctant to change the trackpad without a clear indication.

I also noticed I cannot start the recovery mode (neither internet nor local) and I cannot cleat PRAM with the keyboard (I did so via nvram -c).

Is there any way to verify a track pack issue on the software side (logs, test, etc)?

Thanks in advance!

The keyboard is dependent on the detection of the trackpad. So if the trackpad isn't working properly, neither will your keyboard. Awesome, right?

Sure, makes a lot of sense to conceptionalise a product with a cascading failure. :)

Now I managed to exchange the trackpad but the error remains to some degree. Before I exchanged the trackpad the error was prevalent and I could get it to work 1 out of 20 restarts. Now the keyboard and trackpad work 2 out of 3 times.

Still this remains a nuisance. What i noticed is that the accent key is also lid in orange on the screen keyboard. Could there be a fault with the keyboard itself?
