Backlight not working properly

i have the exact same problem. after a cold boot, the backlight is completely black. I changed the energy saving settings to 3hrs 3hrs. Now I can get the backlight to work by bringing the brightness to 0 and back to 1 with the F1 and F2 keys. It will go out again within a couple of seconds but if I keep it up for 5 minutes or so, it finally stays on, at which point I am able to increase the brightness and it will work for a couple of hours or so. I am considering ordering and inverter board and cable.

Please give us the last 3 characters of the MacBook's serial numbers to determine your exact model. Most of these have a CCFL backlight, however a few models have a LED backlight. The circuitry and ways of dealing with the problem are different for the 2 backlight systems. The models with LED backlights do not have inverters.

If you can see the desktop with a flashlight held at an angle to the screen, then you're right, the problem is the inverter. To test, hook it up to an external monitor and see if it does the same thing. To test if it is a software problem start up from your system installation disk and see if the problem persists.
