Not sure which iPod you have. A generic answer would be that the charge time is about 3-4hrs for a complete charge. It takes about 1hr to charge 80%. This time will vary somewhat with the model of iPod that you have. I would use the device, in your case the iPod, until the battery is empty. Then I would charge it fully for the first time.
