same problem I am having... but its not the mic. You may be having the same problem too, you would think its the mic because the other end can not hear you yet you can hear them. I tried using my bluetooth and still no sound from me on the other end, thats when I realized it couldn't be the mic... I then tested the voice memo app and recorded a little memo and guess what the mic worked fine! I've read taking out the sim card may fix the issue which is what I plan on doing right after this post.

Is the problem also happening during the call (mic falling away during the call) not?

What you can try to do is a restore of your iphone.

If the problem still persists there are 2 possible hardware causes:

- Microphone is broken

- There can be a problem with the microphone on top of the iphone. The big screw underneath the EMI shield can make intermittend contact with the microphone. When it does the microphone mutes. Please check that this screw cannot touch the top microphone and if necesarry isolate these 2 with some electrical tape.

how do you repair the microphone in the iphone 4? I have a repair I need to get done asap. You cannot hear what I am saying on the phone. I tried replacing the speaker because I thought I read the microphone was connected to that? It did not work.

My issue a little different. When in a call using the headset, the remote party hears nothing, but they hear me just fine on speakerphone. Voice memos seem to work, as do video recordings. I don't have a bluetooth headset handy to try that. I was told the proximity sensor had a second mic on it and to replace this, so I ordered the part and followed the below guide, but after 2 hours of fidgeting with tiny screws and getting it replaced, the problem remains the same.

iPhone 4 Power & Sensor Cable Replacement

Did I replace the wrong part? On a side note, my proximity sensor doesnt work at all now, so I will probably take it all apart to make sure I didnt screw something up...

the proximity light sensor has a little cover on the front and most replacements won't come with this so you need to take the one off of your existing sensor, if you don't it won't work.

I too am having problems getting a mic to work after another "iPhone repair man" had his hands on the phone, the phone was taken to him as the earpiece speaker wasn't working right (I sorted this with a hard reset) he had replaced the bottom mic for some reason and even with trying the board in a fully tested and working handset I still cannot get the mic working. HELP ME PLEASE

I solved by putting a shield between the screw and the microphone. : D
