How to test ear speaker on iOS 12 revamped voice memo app?

Hey guys,

iOS 12 revamped the voice memo app and I now cant figure out how to quickly test the ear speaker like I always have. Any suggestions?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

So when you try and play a memo there is no option to choose where the audio outputs?

by

Perhaps I don't understand your question, but can't you just put it up to your ear and listen, to make sure it is working?

by

Aaron, not in the app no. Its now in the control center but theres now no option for switching to the ear speaker.

by

Jim, not sure how hard it is to understand. Have you even used ore tested iOS 12 yet? The voice memo app defaults to playing back through the loudspeaker and of course I would "put it up to my ear" if it was playing through the ear speaker. It does not, its playing through the loud speaker and there is seemingly no option to switch to ear speaker instead, like there always has been in all iOS up to this point. Is that clear enough for you Jim?

by

Oh my, I hadn't noticed that yet. Another easy to use testing gone for good as well as the chance to hear voice memos without informing the neighbourhood about your own business. Well done Apple, well done..

I was curious myself and I tried looking for new techniques online. Couldn’t find any. Finally about a week of exploring the interface I found the solution!!!! Hold down the home button to trigger Siri. Raise it up to your ear and ask a question. She answers using the ear speaker! This will also test the proximity sensor.

Ps: You’re welcome!

Hi,

I found a solution call emergency services with one this numbers 911 or 112 or 000.

I succeeded to test the ear speaker and the proximity sensor but, for the ear speaker test, it’s only 3 beep when, the call end automatically.

PS : Don’t worry, you don’t call emergency without cellular network.

Thanks - that does seem to work for 3 beeps at least. Not what I would call a "good" speaker test but at least it confirms that some sound comes out. :-)

by

Yes, of course but, I didn't find better.

by

I was just trying this on an iphone 6 with no SIM, dialed 000 and actually got the 911 Operator. :-O .... I won't be using this method again.

by

So, you have to be careful in the country where you are.

Phone call is the only other quick option I could think of :(

I think the point of the question was how to test it when you don't always have a SIM card in the device, which is a common scenario for a repair tech.

by

inserting sim card is still faster than connecting to wifi and using siri or other possible solutions. Calling 000, 911, 112 is just WRONG!!!!!!! DONT do it.

You can buy a cheap pay as you go sim for £1. Don’t credit it. Put it in the phone and call that number from another phone. You can answer using the earpiece.

dial *#7353# and hit the call button and your carrier should tell you how you cant complete your call. test the prox sensor and the earpiece speaker all at once.

I found a solution for this. There is a free app called Test M. It tests everything on the phone. You don’t have to do all the tests if you don’t want to. You can just select the hardware icon and then test the ear speaker. A voice will say three numbers thru the ear speaker. They then want you to put the numbers in so the app knows it worked, but of course if you hear it, then your test is over.

Here's the link in the Apple App Store Test M and its free!

And for these who have Android here's that version from the Google Play store Text M

by

This isn't really an option if you're working on someone else's phone. You can't just download software onto their phone.

by

Exactly - I repair/refurbish iPhones and either they don't have an Apple ID in them, or they belong to someone else who in most cases won't want me putting software on their phone. I used to do the same thing but they removed the output switching capability in IOS 12.... why? (because they are infinitely wiser than us, I suppose ;-)
