How do I disassemble the computer's stand?

I have 17inch Intel Imac. I need to carry it overseas and I want to get rid of the stand to fit in my back pack.

Is there anyway to do this without going all the way down to rear case which practically means tearing down the whole thing?

Sadly, yes, you are going to have to tear the whole thing apart to get to the stand. I recommend following the hard drive fan guide all the way until the end, then you'll have to experiment with removing the screws seen in the middle of this picture to get the stand out. I believe there are a few screws underneath that sheet metal cover on the stand hinge that secure the stand to the hinge mechanism.

@ Mayer: Sure I have a notebook for general use. This one is for my mom and I want to carry it with me. I cannot check it in when I'm flying because f the risk of theft. (I had a laptop stolen from my luggage before).

So I have to carry it in my carry on. That is the problem.

Thank you guys for your answers.

I just looked at a couple of the iSight models and see no way to disconnect the stand without a total teardown. Of course a hacksaw would work.

I just reread your question and saw where you plan to put this in a backpack. I would highly recommend trading your machine for a laptop. The risk of breaking your screen along with the weight of this machine make it highly unadvisable to tote it around any where in a back pack. Plus you'll have to pack a keyboard and mouse.
