Can you upgrade wifi on PS4?

I have an original PS4 and I understand that the wifi isn't the best. I was formerly able to have the console hardwired and would get speeds or 100mbps or faster. I am unable to hardwire now and via wifi get 30mbps sometimes, at best. Is there a way to upgrade the wifi on the console to support newer wifi connections? Such as 802.11ac? Would replacing the antenna help?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hello,

Is it specifically the PS4 that experiences speeds like that or is it all the devices on the WIFI network?

As Alex said you can’t replace the WIFI card on the PS4.

What you could do is buy a WIFI extender with speeds up to 100mb/ps and hardwire it trough that, but that is only usefull if the WIFI network even supports speeds like that.

But make sure it has a RJ-45 plug on it.

Thank your for the reply. Would a wifi extender be more reliable than a powerline adapter?

by

No, if you have the option for a powerline adapter then i should go for that. But make sure nothing will interfere on the path.

I've read mixed things between wifi extenders with RJ-45s and powerline adapters. What makes the powerline adapters more reliable and is there a way to check the circuit paths without hiring an electrician? I live in an apartment, relatively newer build (within last 10 years). Would that alone be a good sign for powerline adapters? If I have my router and wifi extender within 20-30 ft from each other, do you think that may work just as well?

Hi!

Unforunately you can’t upgrade the WiFi card on the PS4, as it’s built into the motherboard. Replacing the antenna would not help much, unless you had problems with signal reception.

Are you sure that your router isn’t the problem? Or the hard drive of the console that’s slow?

I'm considering a new router. The speeds of other devices seem to be affected but not as much as the PS4. I'm also fairly certain the hard drive is not the problem.

Any recommendations on routers or router modem combos?

What is the best ps4 WiFi card

by

Replying to Alex on this. The first PS4 was designed to have a 2G wifi card . It's not the guys router I am almost certain. The newer PS4 have a higher card in them. Sony did this deliberately so that the original ps4s couldn't get jailbroken easily and if they did their tech was already outdated. They also had parts of the processor burnt up with the first four major updates to the console.

Hello.

I know I’m a bit late but the original PS4 has a slower WiFi than PS4 Slim and pro for example. The problem isn’t probably laying in your router. I would suggest you checking your WiFi speed on your phone and comparing it to your PS4. If you want to go wireless you could get a WiFi signal booster (make sure it’s ac and 5Ghz) or whatever they are called next to your PS4 and plug Ethernet cable from it to PS4. Another way could be sharing internet via Ethernet cable from a laptop or pc for example. Good thing about this is that if your computer would happen to use only 2.4Ghz network card, you could just buy 5Ghz dongle from Aliexpress or Ebay for less than 10€.

The WiFi cards in playstations are horrible. My laptop is 5 feet away from the console and gets over 100mbps while the console gets 25 on a good day. What’s this business about upgrading the antennae?

by

Really late to this but the majority of the time your wifi is slow is bc the original PS4 wifi can only connect to 2.4ghz wifi. Whereas the slim and pro and most other new technology will run on your 5ghz wifi.

If you have good ethernet speeds from your router, try investing in some decent powerline ethernet adapters. Plugin one unit near your router and the other near your console. Use cat6a cables from router to adapter1 and from adapter2 to console.

This is a good pair you can get on Amazon for under $100.
