Power/Sleep Button being weird

Partial function with the power/sleep button. When I hold the button down long enough to turn off the phone it turns off just as it’s supposed to. But when I press it to put the phone to sleep it rarely works and the phone stays awake.

Am I likely going to need a new cable assembly? Thanks,

Answer this question I have this problem too

Have you recently disconnected the battery to do some other repair? A 5s power button will behave like this if the phone has lost it’s correct date/time after battery disconnect.

Yes, I have disconnected the battery for a repair. I have reset the date and time, though. Is there a fix that you know of? FYI; There is currently no SIM card in the phone as it's one of our back up phones. Not sure why this would matter, though.

The SIM card is part of how it will natively connect to cell service and update the time after a repair, otherwise you have to connect to iTunes.

Put a SIM in it and leave it for awhile or leave it connected to iTunes. The problem will resolve itself as soon as the phone is able to connect for a bit.

Next time you ask a question provide ALL recent repair history--this is a simple problem that most people are unaware of, and it was only by chance that i could recognize it without the history of "this happened after we fixed X"

Thank you Jessa, that's a good point and I'll remember it. I'm still kind of a newbie but I'm glad you asked the relevant question that led to the answer! I didn't at first associate the button malfunction with the repair as it had been awhile, albeit with very little actual use. Not enough to detect the button malfunction anyway and no time either connected to iTunes or with a SIM in place. It's so cool how much I'm learning from this site!

Well, that didn't solve the problem. It still won't go to sleep on command.

You can overlay a new power button without fully installing it to see if this is just a bad button. If the history is "we changed the battery" then the power flex runs under the battery and this then becomes MOST likely. If not, then it is unlikely but still possible. We still don't know the history of this device which makes it impossible to give good answers.
