MacBook Air freezes and shuts off even when idle. OS reinstalled!

Hi guys,

My MacBook Air mid 2013 started freezing and shutting off. I rebooted, reset all SMC, PRV… nothing worked. I then erased everything and reinstalled the original OS (Snow Leopard). It didn’t help.

I then removed the battery and connect it only in energy. This worked and I assumed the battery was too old and I installed a brand new one. To my surprise, now with the new battery and new OS (upgraded to high sierra) it keeps freezing and shutting down.

It shuts down a few minutes after I start the computer - 5minutes. Sometimes it keeps going longer but sometimes it shuts off even 3 minutes after turning on and being idle… nothing running at all.

I installed iStats Menu to monitor temperatures and it seems like the computer is overheating. I get 60 c/140 f sometimes when it is idle. When I replaced the battery I also cleaned the fan and to my surprise the inside of my Mac Air that had never been opened in 5 years was extremely clean, except for a little bit of dust inside of the fan.

Do you guys have any ideas what could be wrong with my computer?

Thanks a lot!

Given the systems age you likely need to clean and re-apply the thermal paste on the CPU. But I think your fan may not be working as it should have kicked in, did it?

Hi Dan, thanks for your input.

The fan keeps silent when I start the computer and doesnt speed up at any moments. It is not broken beacuse I could manually set it to exhaust at 6000rpm and then I can usually work on the computer longer. What other checks could I do to make sure it is the therma paste that needs to be reaplied?

Age is the main factor this system is on the edge and if the fan is working it puts this closer to the top of things I would just do.

thanks Dan! Does it make sense that when I run the computer without battery it does not freeze and doesn't heat up? That is why I thought problem was battery related. But just installed the new battery to find out it is not.
