I can't connect to an external display using a USB-C to HDMI adapter

I am unable to use an external display using either a MOSHI USB-C to HDMI (4K 60) or Insignia adapter.

So far I have tried:

  • Resetting NVRAM
  • Resetting SMC
  • Reinstalling system software MacOS High Sierra
  • Different adapters (MOSHI and Insignia)
  • Different HDMI cables that work with my older MacBook Pro and external display
  • Different displays
Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

What is the USB-C cable you are using? Some are not for data only power! As an example the cable you get with your system is a power cable for the power adapter.

Some hub/adapters are just finicky and refuse to work no matter what.

Some hub/adapters will work after Macbook will first go to sleep with the hub/adapter plugged in, enabling the video output on waking up. If you disconnect such a hub/adapter from the Mac you will most probably need to repeat aforementioned procedure again.

And some hub/adapters will just work no matter what, including the one made by Apple itself.
