symmetrical vertical lines from top-to-bottom in display

Block Image

Hey everybody,

So I’ve got these grey lines against a black background, and the GPU is good.

Does anyone know if this is an LVDS cable issue or if I have to replace the entire panel?

Thanks

Just to be clear here this is only showing up during the boot up and does not show up at other times.

always there, just not as visible against a busy background. i changed background to a solid black so i could get a good picture.

UPDATE: purchased a replacement LCD assembly from the gang at iFixit. received last night and just installed. definitely solved the issue, so now that i have an LCD to play with i’m going to replace various parts until i can, for my own edification, pinpoint exact problem.

Chosen Solution

I’m not sure there is anything you can do to fix this. Take a look at this guide: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 LCD Backlights (CCFL) Replacement As you can see your display uses two CCFL lamps. These shine into the defuser sheets which then offers out an even light to the LCD panel. I’m thinking dust build up on the lamps maybe the cause. The fact its even stripe from top to bottom could also be the LCD crystals are not evenly spread out in the glass sandwich during manufacturing. So this would have been visible before now.

Replacing the screen would likely be the only solution but this is such an old system I doubt you’ll find one in good shape any more.

Thanks Dan,

[linked product missing or disabled: IF168-011] $74 (whoa!) I think your right as to the panel replacement (considering a viable unit is an option). I appreciate the insight as to what is going on under the hood. LVDS cable defect was wishful.

My need to repair even the most antiquated of devices reigns. I will acquiesce to your response being “accepted” to the detriment of my wallet. Thanks!
