If you forgot the combination, the only way to unlock the iPod Nano and enter a new one is to reset it to factory settings. This means that you will lose all your data on the iPod. To restore the iPod Nano to factory settings you have to connect the iPod to its primary computer and select “Restore” from iTunes > Summary tab. Now I think if you are using windows you can also try to

1.Plug the iPod in computer.

2.Go to "My Computer" And click the apporiate drive your your iPod.

3.Change folder option to "View all hidden files and folders"

4.Go to ipod_control

5.Then to Device

6.You should see a file there named "_locked"

7.Open that up with a text editor (Notepad) and the passcode should be right in there.

or of course you could just rename the file to _unlocked

Close your text editor and eject iPod from computer

Not bad for a 4word question :-) good Luck and I hope this helps.

Thanks so much! I was able to change the _locked file to _unlocked and it unlocked my iPod! Thanks so much for your answer!

Fixed it for me on a iPod I got with a unknown code. Put it in Disk Mode, found it and deleted it to just bury the password. This doesn't nuke the unknown volume lock code sadly - gotta erase to clear that.

Did not impact the iPod, but use caution if you choose to bury the passcode by deleting the file - make sure you can risk losing the data! I had nothing to lose, as it was a used iPod with someone's music collection. I did it for science.

It keeps loading it never opens in file explorer

@Jeffrey Gabriel Harris did you make sure that you can see hidden files? What version Win are you using.? This answer is 11 years old and it still worked in 2021 so we'll have to explore what changes have been made with that. You are using a Nano 5th gen correct?

This answer was originally to another question.

Firemensprayer, I would check to see if the "lock switch" is toggled on. That would lock all functions of the iPod except the playback. If it is off (no orange showing) then you can indeed do a hard reset to the iPod. To do this, press and hold the menu and center button on the click wheel until the iPod turns off and restarts. Then let go and see if that works. Let me know if it doesn't.

If you have a passcode on the iPod, you need to remember it... Also, posting the question twice with hardly any information really doesn't help... But try going into "Extras" then to "Screen Lock" and then reset the passcode. Hope that helps...
