Are you able to get to Target Disk Mode? Press and hold the ‘‘‘T’’’ key. It may take a few times to get there. If you are able to you should see a large FireWire Icon on the screen.

What this is doing is using the Intel graphics engine (HD Graphics 3000) Vs trying to get to the dedicated GPU either a Radeon HD 6490M or 6750M. This tells me your dedicated GPU has died and you’ll need a new logic board.

I have managed to get that screen by pressing T but what next? Googled and found its for data transfer!

Yes! It allows you access to the hard drive. So if you need to you can save your stuff! Transferring it to another system.

The point was to see if the rest of the system was working which it is! The GPU chip is gone. Apple had an extended warranty on this model but thats long past now.

The bug-a-boo here is you really can't replace the GPU in this series your self and getting to someone who can will be expensive. The best you could do is replace the logic board with a new one. I would put in a 2012 version if you are so inclined to do.

Try booting from an external hard drive with an earlier system on it like El Capitan.
