Rough idling, rough running, loss of power, poor fuel economy

Truck idles rough after start and continues to do so while driving. Bad vibration. Loss of power, hard to maintain highway speed. Very poor gas mileage.

My attempted fixes have been.

  1. New fuel filter
  2. New spark plugs
  3. New plug wires
  4. New timing belt
  5. New serpentine belt
  6. Tried Sea Foam system cleaner
  7. Tried Chevron fuel system cleaner

this could be lots of things from a bad MAF, bad crankshaft position sensor to a cam positions sensor and many things in between. I would suggest that you get the OBD scanned and see what codes your truck shows. At least then you have a starting point. You also want to let us know the exact year and engine size for your truck.

Thanks so much for responding so quickly. I was in such a rush I completely forgot to add engine and year. It's a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT regular cab 2wd with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder. Funny thing is that the check engine light is not on. Can I still use an OBD if it's not lit? Thanks again.

Yes you can. Not every code trips the check engine light.
