Why is my cooling system not working?

I have an old L775 Toshiba Laptop and its screen broke, i decided to connect it to an external monitor, but the cooling system is not working. Also the main laptop lcd screen is also heating up. I tried turning off the laptop screen, and that’s when the cooling system really fails. Can anyone help me?

How badly is the screen broken and how was it broken . Drop,water damage ,crush ? Was the case damaged as well . When its running do you here the fan ?
