My iMac’s fans are running full blast after a power outage why?

After a power outage last night, when my iMac was running, it was obviously suddenly powered down.

This morning I turned it on and had to wait a considerable time for it the complete its restart process (40minutes). When I logged on I noticed that the fans are running at full blast. Why has this happened and how do I reset the fans to run at their correct speed?

What is your exact model? Apple has many quite a few different versions of the 21.5" iMac's

I’m suspecting something gave out from the surge.

Did you have the system plugged into a good surge suppressor or a UPS? Both help protect your system from damage from surges and in the case of the UPS it can back fill low voltage condition (not all UPS’s do this).

Can you run this app to see whats happening with the fans TG Pro

Hi Dan, I do have surge suppression built-in to the extension lead so I’m hoping that worked and there isn’t any damage. Upon reading other Q&A’s in the forum I’m thinking it could be related to PRAM and or SMC, but I'm a little resistant to trying the resolution options out without others saying its fine to follow and won’t do any harm.

Just been looking at TG Pro and down loaded a free trial copy but it doesn’t include the fan or temperature options which are available in the PRO version

But if you think its worth it I’d give it a go and purchase it.

Hi Dan, I bit the bullet and followed a process which was;

Shutdown the iMac

Remove power plug from iMac

Press and hold On/Off button for 5 seconds

Re-install power plug into iMac

Press on/off button to restart iMac

That cleared my problem

Many thanks for your help on this issue

Best regards

Well, I'm happy things cleared up! Basically you did a SMC reset.

TG Pro is for monitoring your temps & fans status. I use it on all my systems to keep an eye on things. I do recommend it. Over-riding the fans either way is not really a smart thing. Sometimes the computer is smarter than the human ;-} Its trying to tell us it either needs cleaning (dust and maybe the thermal paste).
