replaced optical drive with SATA optibay and 1 TB HD

My entire project was:

1. replacing my old drive with 64Gb SSD

2. replacing the optical drive for a second hard drive (1TB Seagate SATA2 Hard drive)

used the optibay tray

3. updating from tiger to snowleopard

I've done all the labor and the SSD is good and mounted, the optibay fit like a glove, BUT Disk Utility doesn't recognize the 1TB drive. I've checked the connection and its fine. Could it be the optibay tray?

currently I'm still booting off my original external and it's killing me not having snow leopard. i need vectorworks 2011 for work and cant get it with tiger... so if anyone has tips it would be greatly appreciated!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Switch the drives. I've seen the same problem. I put the new hard drive in, formatted and installed a system, then put the SSD drive in. I have no idea of why this works, but it does.

not sure i know enough about what was done.........

You can use a bootable linux CD to at least figure out if the hard drive is working correctly (assuming this is a brand new hard drive that has no MBR, etc...never been used before).

A bootable linux distro like knoppix or a free program like gparted could help find the drive, if found and you know how to use the tools in knoppix you can also help initialize/format the drive with HFS or another format........ and once formatted diskutility should handle any additional setup needed what ever that might be depending on what is done.

A great deal of this if not all of it can also be done via the command line options in a terminal shell in OSX for more advanced/powerfull features to help figure some of this out, however some experience would be required/recommended, if a mistake is made it could be costly. (wrong drive etc).

If this does not work check all connections, check if another hard drive (your old hard drive) works inside the optibay tray, if not then the optibay may be the problem......

All of the programs mentioned are free, i use linux, thats just me. Some others may have some other insights on resolving the issue or providing another suggestion.

I have not done a 2nd hard drive in a macbook yet, a EFI update or some kind of update might be needed that i am not aware of.

Not an answer, but another question: did you have to do anything special to put a SATA drive in the spot where your optical drive was? My 2008 Nonunibody MB has an ATA "ATAPI" connection to the SuperDrive, and I was wondering if normal SATA optibays would fit in there. Are they both SATA compatible? All the optibays I can find are usually for Unibody MBs, which are SATA. Ideally I would like to put my stock HDD in the optical drive, and a SSD in where my current drive is. I'm a newb at this stuff.
