New hard drive not recognized by install disks

I just installed a new harddrive on my Imac G5 ran the apple hardware tests and mother board memory all fine. I checked your website attached all cables and neither the install disk or the hardware test can find the harddrive can it be a cable problem? If so where can I get new cables to attach the harddrive.

Any help is appreciated.

Thats the thing, under disk utilities the disk can't be seen. When I run the dick utilities or the hardware test the disk is not there.

OK so the hardrive stopped functioning, I thought it was a hardrive problem, put the harddrive in a case and ran it off my new imac runs fine. Bought a new harddrive anyways and formatted it today outside the broken imac and then installed still it does not recognize that it is attached. Turns out the old hardrive is fine, so it must be a cord or connection issue. The motherboard is fine according to the hardware test. Does that help at all? I am a bit lost with it as the install disks run fine but cannot see a hardrive attached.

You need to replace the HD cable.

Open it up and inspect the 22 capacitors on the logic board. Look for swollen and/or leaking caps.

Does your serial number fall within this range:

Serial Number ranges:

  • W8435xxxxxx – W8522xxxxxx
  • QP435xxxxxx – QP522xxxxxx
  • CK435xxxxxx – CK522xxxxxx
  • YD435xxxxxx – YD522xxxxxx

will the machine boot from your external hard drive?

by

Sorry I am a rookie at this , how do I make it boot from the external harddrive?

by

Sympotoms of bad caps on this model can be almost anything, I'm fixing the 1.9 GHz Isight model right now that has bad caps and it runs fine for 15 minutes but has three visable bad caps. To start up from another drive hold down the Option key on start up and it will show you the available startup disks.

Ok so I tried to boot from the external hard drive and the old apple screen came up and the curser spun for 10 minutes and nothing. So I will take the mother board out and have a look then at the caps. If they are gone where can I order another motherboard, I cannot seem to find one on your site for this model. Is it counter productive to try to same this machine if the motherboard is done? Thanks for all your help, the process has been fun.

I've used DT&T services to get logic boards fixed. Right now I've sent two boards off to a company in Utah that I found on eBay, they're charging $85 each board for cap replacement but I haven't even heard if they received the boards. So if in a hurry, try DT&T, if not check back in a couple of weeks and I should have a report on the Utah company.
