Why back display light on MacBook won't stay on? Problem with wires?

My computer is from 06 & I don't have apple care anymore and I may have dropped it a few times. When I use my computer on my lap or on the bed the back lighting won't stay on I have to put the dimmer all the way down and slowly raise the dimmer sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.. would it be loose wires? or is there permanent damage?

Lately I've been using it on my dresser due to lack of computer desk.. its been working better but sometimes still acts up. any idea what i can do?

You have done better than most at describing what is really going on. I find it interesting that it seems to stabilize when sitting on a flat surface with no movement/flexing of the chassis. From the wonderful guide provided by mayer. I can't see how motherboard heat would affect the inverter since it is in the top part of the laptop. But I am not an Apple guru, my background is electronics. If mayer's solution doesn't work my email is in my profile.

Sounds like your inverter is starting to fail as it heats up. Here's how I replace it: MacBook Core 2 Duo LCD & Inverter A1181 (fast method) Replacement
