Which MacBook is it? If you don't know look on the back and plug the serial number in here and it will tell you:

It sounds like it is charging or trying to, let it charge for several hours. What is the history on this machine?

I would try an SMC reset first. Depend on your system but should be able to look up instructions for that fairly easily. If no luck with that try a different charger/battery.
