iPhone 3GS doesn't ring or play music?

My phone suddenly stopped playing music one day and i soon discovered that it didn't ring or vibrate when anyone called/text.

I can still hear people over the phone and they can still hear me, and it still flashes on the screen.

I have reset it, checked the volume, checked the silent switch, put earphones in and out (the display says it is on ringer, not earphones) and finally rebooted it.

Nothing.

Has your phone been opened before? Perhaps your main speaker on the bottom of the phone is damaged. There is a speaker that lies within the black plastic part of the dock connector. If the ribbon/wires to this are damaged or detach, you will get no sound from that speaker.

Look at the 2 solder points above where it says "J3"

That is what connects the speaker to the #4 ribbon. You can desolder this and solder a new one on, or just replace the dock.

Just right above the home button contacts. Those are the ones I'm talking about. The ones labeled j2 are for the mic.

You need to replace the dock connector. But not at $50. That is outrageous!!! They are $20 tops! Go buy an OEM one on ebay or at wirelesspartsinc.com. They are very easy to install. Of you can have a repair business do it for you. They should charge around $45. Hope that helps!

hector, I took a good look at the various docks I have lying about and couldn't find an easy way of removing the speaker from inside the dock..do you have any instructions for doing this kind of repair? I've always just swapped the whole part as it seemed far easier..

See post below. I usually replace the black portion of the dock only.

Hey Polly,

I dont think they sell just the inside speaker, but they do sell the speaker and its housing.

However, if you have a good speaker and a messed housing you can possibly just pull out the inside speaker and transfer it to the new one. Its tricky since it is glued in there and the ribbon comes from the inside out though. The ribbon is also glued.
