Why did my iPhone 5 cause two batteries to swell?

I replaced a swollen battery in my iPhone 5 with an iFixit battery. The phone worked fine for several months until the replacement battery swelled. Any idea why this happened?

These are two most likely reasons:

- The batteries are from a bad batch from the supplier

- The charging cable or charger you are using is of cheap quality (no-name brand / not original).

These can actually damage the battery and cause issues like this if the power coming from the charger / cable is not stable / clean.

The charging cables (that are MFi certified) have a chip in them for surge protection to protect against power surges and to avoid the battery from bloating.

Thanks for your prompt answer. My question should have included the information that the iFixit battery replaced a three year old one and that I am using an Apple cable and and charger.
