Unit is on but nothing on TV screen

Play station was working just fine. Yesterday I was going to turn the unit off and it asked me a question on TV screen which I did not know what that meant. I just manually turned the unit off and since then when I turn it on I hear the starting sound but nothing else. The screen is black and no picture or sound. Please help. Thanks.

I don't suppose you took note of what the question was...? I'm betting it was directly related. I'll do some research and see what I can find, but that would really help narrow the field.

It appears there's a video-detect reset function of the PS3. Assuming there's no hardware trouble, the cables are all connected properly, and the TV is set to the correct input, try holding down the power button for 5 seconds or so while the unit is off. It should beep a second time to let you know it worked. Now, try turning it on.

It also appears that Tim Gelvin (iFixit contributor) is writing a guide to address this exact issue. It's showing up as incomplete, but it helps to validate my own research.

I hope this helps!

I did that exactly. The screen started blue. Then I did as you said. And it went black then blue then back to black after about 10 seconds. So is the system supposed to stay on after I let go, after holding it for 5 seconds? My system did but still nothing on the tv. (Screen is on tho, just black)
