Why isn't my iMac A1311 not booting when the glass panel is installed?

My iMac A1311 / EMC2428 was powering on intermittently and stopped working completely. Tests showed that the power switch was faulty.

Before, I found that the unit case, especially near the PSU was getting pretty hot so initially I thought the PSU was bad.

As I couldn't get an OEM replacement switch I installed a 'normally open' switch. This switch worked perfectly, but notice that when I install the glass panel the unit will not boot. Only when the panel is off it will boot successfully.

Any suggestions on the possible cause / fix will be greatly appreciated.

Where did you route this new switch?

Often I manage to get the switch to work again by just doing a good job cleaning it and sometimes needing to rebuild it a bit.

Thanks Dan.

I installed the new switch on the bottom of the outer case, next to the RAM compartment.

I considered cleaning the original switch but getting to it would have been quite a task, plus, I wasn't sure if that would have resolved the switch issue.

Sounds like it’s shorting out when you’ve put the panel on

I agree with Ben here sounds like the mounting location is a bit to close to the display assembly.
