When I turn it on I only see a gray screen and computer makes a fanlike noise. Does not make apple chime noise when you power on. When I hold down the option key on start up the cursor arrow appears.

I went to turn on my computer today and only got a gray screen..
You can also try powering on with the option key held down...if you get to the option menu, that is a good sign, and probably means the computer is still good but that it's not finding the hard drive.
If option mode doesn't appear at all, you might want to remove the battery and try re-seating the RAM.
Also, try resetting the PRAM by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds when the machine is off and connected to AC power. Sometimes this can jumpstart a machine that is stuck in a hung state.
