Reset function is not working. Hardware issue?

Hello.

My 5.5G iPod is working just fine apart from one thing. It's not possible to do a 'hard reset' by pressing and holding Menu and Select buttons.

I wonder if this might be somehow connected with a click wheel insulation/grounding. Recently, I bought a logic board without a 'silver ground strap' (as described here). Also I wasn't particularly bothered with securing the 'ground tab' (link). I assumed plastic face plate would press it against metal framework firmly enough.

Other key combinations like Select+Play/Pause button to enter Disk Mode or Select+Play/Pause button for Diagnostic Mode function properly.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

and the individual buttons work as the should? Menu, select, and play/pause work fine only that one combination not working? BTW in your question you use the same combination for Disk mode and Diagnostics. Diagnostics is Select/Reverse....;-)

That's right. The individual buttons and combinations mentioned above (I mistyped the one for Diagnostic Mode) work perfectly.

I would try to at least provide some ground to it. I previously made my on ground cable by using aluminum foil and some glue stick. Worked at that time. Anyhow, I am not yet convinced that this is your problem but it would be start. Make sure that your click wheel is working okay. The other thing I would do is a firmware update, just to make sure that the problem is not related to that. Odd issue for sure....

How should the foil be laid out? From this picture I can tell that it is barely surrounding the center button and not "touching" anything particular (apart from being affixed to metal framework).

How about a ground tab?

I already have the latest firmware installed (1.3).

I peeled my old one of and used it for a pattern. If the end that touches the metal frame on top is not to messed up a small strip of aluminum foil to extend the current grounding strap might do. You also need to make sure that you connect the ground on the side of the frame coming from the click wheel. Did your ipod give you this weird error after an update. You might just try to reinstall an older version firmware. Just to make sure...;-)

I have never used any firmware other than version 1.3. It was released long time ago.

I'd have to make a new ground strap since the old one is gone.

The only other thing I can think of would be to try a different click wheel. Since that should also be the cheaper part to purchase. After that you might be looking toward a logic board, unless you find something obvious, like bad wire connection or corrosion etc. Hope it works out.

I ordered a new click wheel. Hope it will help. I let you know when it comes. Thanks.
