Big plume if white smoke after running for a while

Last week I checked my oil and got distracted and forgot to tighten the oil cap. I started up my T2300 Crafsman and quickly saw oil squirt up after about 1 minute if mowing. I then checked my oil and it was low, so I added oil. I checked it and it was above the fill on the dipstick. I didn’t do anything about it. I started cutting. Ran fine for about 30 minutes of cutting. I hadn’t cut in a few weeks and where I live the grass will get long. So I saved the long stuff for last. As soon as I started cutting the long grass, the engine started running harder (expected) then all of the sudden a huge plume of white smoke puffed. It literally puffed meaning the cloud of smoke was thick and pretty much appeared all at once instead of me seeing more and more smoke as I ran the mower. After it happened the first time. I let things settled and tried again. The grass was thick so I just assumed it was because of that, but taking note that smoke is never good. Well it did it again and then consistently after that. I then raised the deck and as I was driving it back to the garage and it did it again. Today, I tried one more time. It ran for about 10 minutes and no smoke. So I figured I’d give it a try. As soon as I hit the thicker grass it did it again, but this time before the big plume of smoke, is stop it frequently and just look for smoke and I did see some coming from exhaust and it was white. This last time it happened the smoke appeared and then I went to kill the engine and it wouldn’t stop the first time I tried even though the ignition was on Stop. I then turned the key back to start and back to stop, the engine backfired twice in a row and then stopped. I then let it sit a few minutes. Restarted it just to put it back in the garage, so the deck was raised and drove it up my driveway (about a 100 yards and it didn’t smoke). I THINK I overfilled the oil but I don’t know. Thanks for your time.

So what exactly is your question? If you are wondering if over filling the engine with motor oil could cause this smoking problem the answer is yes. And it will continue smoking until you burn the excess off or you foul the plug entirely and it won't run any more which ever comes first. You should drain the excess or extract with some sort of suction device and get it to the proper designed level and the problem should go away.
