Upgrade or Buy a new MacBook?

Upgrade or Replace?

My Macbook Pro has the original 4GB of memory it had when it was new. I've done the research and my model can be upgraded to 16GB. My hard drive is almost full also and needs upgraded. Perhaps a SSD? The original battery started to swell, so I have replaced the battery in this past year. I have a new track pad for it because it was damaged by the swelling battery, but haven't installed it yet.

Would upgrading and replacing the things that need it be worth the time, effort, and cost, or would I be better off purchasing a new Macbook? It has always been a strong and dependable computer but with each MacOS release, it does show its age. It has slowed down and while I know upgrading the memory will give it a boost, is it really going to help for the long term?

I believe this is still a great machine and well worth updating. Plus it is repairable and upgradeable, which the Retina machines are not. It would help us to know your exact machine because the 2010 13” went from a Core 2 Duo processor up to an i7.

You can go here to do that:

I feel you would be better off going with a hi-bred drive (an SSHD) rather than an SSD. I’ll comment more on that once I know your specific machine.

UPDATE

You may also want to consider changing out to the 2012 hard drive cable. You may have to modify the hard drive retaining bar that goes over the cable. On some I just use a pair of dikes to cut out the middle of the bar.

Thank you for your insightful and helpful answer. I have the 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo machine and I should have said that in my question. I've been looking at the SSHD and feel it would make a better choice.

Again, Thank you for your thoughts and help. I have upgraded my Macbook Pro to 16GB of RAM and I have a 1TB Hybrid drive arriving tomorrow. The RAM alone made a world of difference in performance and I expect the HD to boost that even more. It's like having new Mac!

I have the same machine and upgraded it with 16GB of RAM, 480 SSD and a new battery last year. It became a new machine. I like the glass screen with a black border and the feel of this MacBook Pro, didn't want to buy a new one, plus I also like having the DVD drive in it.

The only issue I've started to have is the trackpad doesn't make the click sound every so often. To fix this I tried the bang on it hack, which seems to work only temporarily. At some point I'm going to have to open it up and see if it's just dirt, or the screw needs adjusting, or the battery is bulging. I'm hoping it's not the Newer Tech battery bulging already. The original battery never bulged.

Turned out that the reason the trackpad wasn't clicking anymore was because the battery was bulging. That battery lasted a tad over a year. I replaced it and everything is fine again.

Have you ever even touched or seen one of these machines?

I have own 3 macs and all of them were lemons and apple wouldn't help me at all, but I they just left me with those faulty devices. So I changed to windows pc's and it was good choice for me I'm currently using Huawei MateBook X 13" 512 GB and it works like a dream!!!

I've had just as many issues with PC's as I have with Mac's, but I will say that Apple replaced parts in my Mac's outside of the warranty. Unfortunately, Apple isn't the same company anymore, which is a shame.
