If I only print in B&W, why are my color cartridges now empty?

I really have a Epson WF-4740 - sorry, not a choice on the program.

Anyway why do I have to now buy new color cartridges when I don't print in color but only B&W? Is his some sinister way of making money?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

It seems like milk and many other products these cartridges have an expiration date that happens whether or not you use the product.
