Superdrive beginning to fail.

My Superdrive has begun making a low pitched gravely noise and sometimes works, sometimes not. Does anyone know if you can lubricate the spindle?

The iMac recognizes the drive, and recognizes the disc, but cannot finish a burn.

I've never seen anyone repair one of these drives with the exception of cleaning the lens. You can replace the drive or go with an external drive that will move to your next machine. Here's the part: [linked product missing or disabled: IF167-007] IFixit appears to be out of stock but the following drives will work in your machine: 661-4385, 661-4391, 661-4637, 661-4716 just do a web search for your best pricing.

I use an external LaCie firewire/USB. Here are some options: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/family....

Thank you for your response. I was pretty certain it was best to replace it. I just wasn't keen on the idea of having to open the iMac twice in case the SuperDrive couldn't be repaired so thought I'd ask first. It would most likely require some new parts to make it right, and of course, parts aren't available. So thanks for your input on the matter!

Sure the parts are available, I gave you a link to the replacement drive.

Customer service hun, well I've been looking for you! Please consider a name change as yours is misleading here, unless of course you actually are iFixit customer service.
