Hi,

It may be that the LCD screen backlighting is failing or perhaps the screen cable connection may be slightly loose etc.

Here's a link to the ifixit Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Assembly Replacement guide, which should be of some help in gaining access to the flex cable connection and also in replacing the LCD screen if it is deemed to be the problem.

Before dis-assembling the phone try the "dimming" test in the phone's hardware test menu to check if it shows what the problem may be.

Whenever I deal with phones that have a LCD that does not work as intended, it is a hardware problem. This means that something inside of your phone is broken, not working as it should, or is faulty. I recommend you try replacing the screen, and if it doesn't work, return the screen, and I would check each of the ribbon cables of the screen, and of the battery to make sure there is no kinks or tears. Hope this helps!
