iPhone 5 charges while dead then when it turn on it wont charge at all

i have recived a iphone 5 and it was dead so i hook it up to my computer and it started charging then soon as it turn on it stop charging then it died so i repeated the task by pluggging it in my wall and it charge then turn on and it stop charging and died, so i dont what to do.
