Grey rectangle upon boot-up after attempting to replace screen

I attempted to change my retina display with a brand new ifixit replacement. Despite following the steps meticulously (and disconnecting/reconnecting everything several times), every time I start my MacBook with the new display, the screen hangs displaying a Grey rectangle and never makes it past this. After repeated failures, I followed the same steps and found the original display still works (albeit with the same graphical blemishes it had previously). Is this evidence of a faulty replacement display or is this grey rectangle something that may able to be resolved without asking for a new replacement?

Grey rectangle makes me think more of a graphics failure rather than a screen problem. What's the history of that machine ? It would be better if you would take a picture and enclose it to your message so that we can also see exactly what you see.

Thanks, arbaman. To be more specific, the entire screen turns a light grey/white aside from ~1 inch columns on both sides which are black. The display hangs at this screen (after hearing the Mac bootup sound), no Apple logo or anything else appears.

The machine, which I've had since 2012, has never had any technical issues, the original display did though develop significant graphical issues (related to the laptop being dropped at one point), hence the replacement attempt.
