Does it have a metal cover on it that says OHV? if so it is a 4 stroke/cycle.

Hi @vulkus ,

Just for my info.

Is having to add oil separate to the fuel in an engine a good indicator that it is a 4 stroke?

Don't 2 strokes have oil added to the fuel? Just curious.

Cheers

I believe if you need to add oil to the crankcase and it has a dipstick it is a 4 stroke. If you need to add oil to the fuel mix it is a 2 stroke. Unless of course it is like the old motor boat engines that had the separate oil tank.

Thanks very much.

In a mower, a seperate oil fill or dipstick denotes a 4 cycle engine. Straight gas with no more than 10% ethanol is required. Smaller handheld lawn equipment that is also 4cycle requires fuel/oil mix. Its important to read your manual.
