I've been putting it off for a while for no particular reason other than I cant be bothered to wait the few minutes it takes but I went to update to iphone OS 4.3.1 by clicking the update button on the summary tab of iphone on itunes but it's just coming up with a dialogue box saying "This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version."
Am i missing something really obvious?

yep... 9.2.1 is the itunes software version
4.3.1?? is the iphone software.
just check that your iphone is plugged in and recognised before you start.. make sure it's displayed on the left side of the itunes screen, click on the iphone and then info bar at top. This should take you to the screen for updating/restore.

I'm doing it all right but i still can't update. I'm clicking the button you describe and it comes up with that message.
Jon Sim, when you hit the update button you get a itunes version dialogue? Does itunes recognize your phone?
try cleaning the dock of your iphone of dirt and dust, then open itunes, whilst holding home button connect to USB. Itunes should then "see" your phone. If not I'd try uninstalling itunes and doing a fresh install

If you dont update to iTunes 10. you will not be able to restore any firmware that's 4.0 and above.

after i download the software it says 'can't update because its out of time' or something like that, ive been trying for more than a month and keeps giving me the same error. can somebody hekp me?

ps nevermind, I still haven't updated my itunes... am still in the dark ages! my laptop is still on 7.something, the mac is on 10 so i guess that's a start. ;-)
