Taptic Replacement. IOS update required?

Hi guys

My Taptic Engine in my 6s has stopped working. Force touch doesn't give any tactic feedback and vibration doesn't work anymore. I took it to a 3rd party phone repair shop and they gave me a good price but they said I would need to update my phone from IOS 10.3.2 to IOS 11.3 or the new Taptic Engine would not work.

Is this a thing? I don't want to update my phone because apart from this issue it is running as smooth as ever, but I would love a working Taptic Engine again.

Thanks

Hello, daenke.kong,

I believe you need to update your iPhone because the parts new, and it may need to be “calibrated” to the most recent update. If you haven’t heard, throughout IOS 10 and 11, apple has had issues with 3rd party replacements (look up some articles if you are curious) and they had to send out an update for new parts to even work. So, on your update, new taptic engines may not function. If you are worried about performance, and are leaving your phone at IOS 10.3.2 because it runs so smooth, you could also replace the battery and it should be running like the day you got it even on IOS 11.3.

Hope this helps!
