have you cleaned the phone out properly with isopropyl alcohol?open the phone up and clean everything in sight. if you don't then the problem may recur. it is more likely that the connector for the computer/charger is at fault or connector 4. if no charge can get to the battery via the dock then no itunes and no downloading of photos!

SOMETHING SIMILAR HAPPENED TO ME.

MY 3G WORKED FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS THEN DIED.

WHEN CONNECTED TO THE MAINS THE apple SHOWS NOTHING MORE ,

BUT MY PC DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT.

SHALL I BUY A BATTERY AND CHANGE IT SO I LOSE MY WARRANTY?

ANY CHANCE I STILL RETRIEVE MY PHOTOS?

you need to follow the ifixit guide for removing the motherboard/logic board so that you can clean this properly.iPhone 3G Logic Board Replacement it to dry overnight.

you can submerge it but only for minutes- ideally you need to clean all the parts including those under the metal cover- you can prise this off using a little flat head screw driver to ease up all the little tabs, go slowly and carefully or you can damage all the parts underneath.

as to you saying you have opened the phone to 175- does this mean you haven't disconnected the cables 1,2,3? you need to do this to get to the logic board. the 2 parts of the display (metal back board/screen/lcd) are screwed together-follow the guide to take front panel apart so you can clean them.

BTW- your warranty was void the moment this phone got water damage...

Hi. Never saw the #3 tab on my phone that I keep reading about and there is nothing for me to lift up before sliding cable out. Mine is supposed to be a 3g

I know this is an old trick, but have you tried placing dry rice into the phone for a day. As silly as it might sound, dry rice will absorb a great deal of moisture. Will it work 100%? Nothing will. But I have personally seen success cases.
