Why is my optical drive in my MacBook making a grinding sound?

I have a Macbook with a 1.83GHz Intel core Duo processor and here is my problem:

When ever I insert a CD into the OPTICal DRIVE you can hear it start spinning the disk and then this horrible grinding or crunching sound occurs for a while and then (most of the time) it will eject the cd after a few seconds.

I inspect the disc and it perfectly fine. No scratches.

But "once in a blue moon" i will insert a disc And it will actually read it and start working... But 99% of the time it does not work.

Do i need a new optical drive or is there a way of fixing the problem without replacing it?

What i've decided to do is completely replace the optical drive myself and upgrade a few of the components like the memory and the hard drive. After doing some solid research on the subject this seems to be the best way to go.

Thanks :)
