I have a element TV remote that was soaked. How can I fix it?

My cat knocked over a cup of water and my element tv remote will not do anything. There are no screws so I cannot take it apart to make sure all of the components are dry...any advice?

Hi,

First remove the batteries from the remote to prevent any further damage from occurring to the components due to electrical paths created by the water that weren't in the remotes operating design.

Double check that there are no screws holding the case in the battery compartment under a label perhaps.

Usually the case is held together by plastic clips at intervals along the seam.

You'll have to pry the remote's case open along the "seam' line.

I've found that a good tool for doing this is a paint scraper with a 1"-1.5" blade. The sharper the blade the better, This hopefully will cause less cosmetic damage to the remote than say a small screwdriver.

Start on a corner or near to where the transmitting IR LED projects at the front of the remote.

Here is a video that whilst the remote still has screws also shows the 'prying' action.

Once you have it open, clean the board using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to disperse and remove all traces of water and any possible corrosion that has started to occur.

You can also just try drying it with a hair dryer set to "cool heat", not hot and then check for any component damage or corrosion and then let it air dry until satisfied that it is completely dry before reinserting the batteries and testing it..
