Why is there no sound from the speakers?

I recently purchased this iBook G3 on eBay, from a reputable vendor, and slowly realized there doesn't seem to be any sound coming from the internal speaker. Sound definitely comes out of the audio port through earbuds, which suggests this isn't a software problem. Is there some obvious hardware issue I can check? Is there a software problem I'm overlooking? PRAM/PMU resets don't seem to help.

Before purchasing a replacement topcase, definitely follow the guide QEII mentions in order to remove the topcase and verify the speaker cable going from the speakers to the logic board is in fact connected. Sometimes people who build laptops forget occasionally to plug this cable in. If it's plugged in, make sure it's plugged in securely, and apply slight pressure in order to make sure it is fully seated.

It could also be that the plug this cable connects to is broken off of the logic board, or that the problem is with the logic board itself, although that is unlikely due to sound working through the audio port.

But definitely verify it's plugged in -- from my experience that's far more often the issue than both speakers being dead, and it would be a shame to spend the money if you don't need to.

Well if it comes out the Audio out port I would suggest replacing the speakers. (The upper case includes the speakers)
