My computer will not print because it says the ADF Cover is open

I had a paper jam in the document feeder of my BrotherMFC 8950 DW printer and when I pulled the paper out and tried to use the printer again a message was displayed stating that I needed to close the ADF cover and then press the STOP key. I did this but the printer still doesn't work and the printer still says the ADF cover is open which it does not appear to be. How do I get the printer to reset?
