check the dock of the iphone.. you often get a build up of dirt and dust from your pocket in there. Use a small paint brush to flick any dirt and debris out.

You might also like to try a different USB port and Jon's suggestion of a new cable if the phone is not charging etc either.

I agree with pollytintop. It's really amazing how much dirt and lint can get caught up in the dock connector and headphone jack.

If you don't have a small paint brush, as he suggested, you can use a toothpick and/or compressed air. Just make sure you don't break off the toothpick inside there...you shouldn't need to use force.

As recommended also, trying another port and/or cable can't hurt, either.

Try holding home button and then plugging USB cord in, have you also tried reset? Hold home and power for 10 sec until apple appears then allow to reboot..

I had this problem and I tryed every solution out there but nothing worked. So I downloaded a trial of a program called disc aid for iphone. It must have sorted the usb issue, because since then, itunes now recognises my phone.

It appears that you have a bad cable. Try using another cable and open iTunes.

It sounds like a bad USB port. Try plugging in your iPhone on another computer and see if it shows up on iTunes. If so, then the problem lies in your USB port, since you mentioned that your dock connector and cable are working properly. Another thing you can try is to reset. To do this press and hold both the sleep button (upper left corner) and the Home button for 10 seconds. You'll see the option for turning off the iPhone, but continue to hold both buttons until the screen shows the Apple logo and release both buttons. If it shows up, then you're good to go. However, if it still doesn't show even after using another USB port, then your controller may be bad.
