Battery suddenly stopped charging, magsafe stays green

Dear all,

I am having a very annoying problem.

The battery of my MBP early 2011 suddenly stopped charging. It was all OK until a few days ago when I realised the battery won't charge. The computer works OK (also I feel it is a bit slower than before) when it is plugged to the charger but the magsafe is immediately turning green and nothing happens after that.. no charge. If I unplug it, the computer stops working.

I tried SMC and PRAM reset, removing and re-installing the battery.... I called my local MacBook repair shop and they said they can probably fix it for $350 (australian). I have tried the charger on a friend's computer and it worked fine... Any idea what is going on? I dont want to pay 350$ if I can get a bit of help in here.

I attached a screenshot of coconut battery just in case that helps.

Well, you've used your system quite heavily on battery as you can see your cycle count is well above 1,000 cycles!

So for starters, you'll need a new battery Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks. You may need to adjust your usage habits here a bit as you appear to allow the system to fully discharge the battery (less than 10%) over 15 times a mouth, that's quite a lot! LiOn batteries are not like NiCad batts which you needed to drain them down otherwise they wouldn't fully charge. Here LiOn batteries work best when not discharged more than 50% and then allowed to trickle charge back up. Full discharging pushes the charging logic as well as can cause the battery to degrade.

As for your charging issue, the voltage comparator logic on the logic board may need repairs but without a good battery in place, it's hard to tell.

Battery replacement is quite easy! MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Early 2011 Battery Replacement But, you'll need to look around a bit to find a battery as shipping LiOn batteries to down-under is a bit tricky! If you have a friend visiting the States or even Europe they could hand carry it on the flight back.

Thanks Dan, I actually ordered a new battery recently. Should be delivered shortly.

Do you think this will solve my charging issues ? I will keep you posted once I installed it.
