Leopard drags horribly on even a low-end G4, so why on earth would anyone want to run it on a G3? But I think we are taking the question too literally. I think the proper answer to the asker's desire for a G3 to "work like a new MacBook", is that this is simply never going to happen. The newest OS you can install on a G3 (without going to ridiculously extreme measures, and ending up with a hideously slow machine) is 10.4 Tiger, and that is a universe away from Snow Leopard on a new MacBook.

However, Tiger is far better than Panther or Jaguar, so if you're running one of those you should definitely consider a Tiger upgrade in order to make your laptop relatively more usable and compatible.

Short answer: nope.

Long answer: the iBook G3 runs the older PowerPC architecture. A new MacBook runs on Intel processors. Apple made 10.6 Snow Leopard Intel-only so they didn't have to double the code... and a lot of other reasons. The greatest OS your iBook can realistically run is Tiger. Finding tiger online seems to be a bit difficult, but there are a lot of copies available on eBay if that's your cup of tea. Just search "tiger mac os x" and it pulls up a bunch of install DVDs. See Mayer's system requirements below for a quick check if your G3 will run Tiger. Unfortunately, you won't get close to the capabilities of Snow Leopard with that machine. Sorry.

Hope that helps.

The most you can do with a G3 is max the memory and upgrade the hard drive.

Nice changes Josh

If you go the ebay route please make sure you get a Retail version and NOT a machine specific one that won't work with your computer.

Josh's intentions are good and for the most part he is correct with the except that your machine will not run 10.5 as that requires a G4 processor along with the other requirements he listed. The highest operating system your machine will take is 10.4. Here are the system requirements for it:

To use Mac OS X v10.4, your Macintosh needs:

A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor

Built-in FireWire

At least 256 MB of RAM

DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation

At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode

by

Any hard drive imaged with 10.5 will run in a G3 machine that meets the requirements... in fact, it will run even if it doesn't meet the requirements. You just won't be able to install directly to that machine as a limitation of the installer.

You could install MintPPC ... There are many new Linux based OSes that will work on the iBook G3 !
