Powermac G3 Hard Drive won't format for tiger installation

so, recent;y, i got a bigger hard drive for my powermac g3(10GB to 80GB) but when i enter disk utility, and do to the drive to format it, is starts, shows the status bar, and never makes it past 1/20 of the way there, disk utility never freezes, but after letting it attempt to format all night, it never made any progress, the computer isn't frozen, and the drive is good, but it won't format, I have also tried changing the jumper with no luck, any ideas?

Do you know if you've got a rev1 or rev2 B&W, if you've got a rev1 then the HD controllers aren't very stable and it could be it isn't compatible with your new drive.

There's a bit more info on the lowendmac site

http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/blue-white-...

the rev2 have an IDE controller marked 402, which I think is down near the IDE plug, not 100% as our rev2 is a plane journey away, few years since I worked on it.
