How can I upgrade an early 2009 iMac

Hello,

I have an early 2009 24¨ iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06ghz with 8gb RAM , GPU ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 1TB HD.

I am wondering how could I upgrade my iMac to be able to use it again for Photoshop retouching?

Would I need to change the graphic card? Would going for 1TB SSD make enough difference? Is there anything else I should consider?

Many thanks in advance!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Yes its time for a new system. Look for a used i7 based iMac or if you can swing it get one of the newer iMac's. I would make sure it could support 16 GB of RAM and have at least a 256 GB SSD drive.

Thank you Dan. Disappointing, but it is what it is.

I'm afraid it would be optimistic to upgrade this machine to be able to properly work with a modern version of photoshop but you could try.

I do not think you would be able to upgrade the graphics card as apple has a tendency to use laptop format graphics cards on their imacs and the dimensions of those are extremely specific to the pc they are installed in. Also upgrading probably wouldn't gain you much performancewise as you motherboard, cpu and ram would sufficiently bottleneck the systems performance and cause it to be very slow.

I would opt to buy a cheap modern laptop rather than upgrade a 2009 imac as the laptop will be faster and cheaper.
